Dirty Weekend at Glengarnock Castle

This summer, with COVID restrictions easing, we're looking forward to getting back out into the project area and engaging with the amazing heritage that can be found there. We'll be kicking things off with a community focused archaeological weekend at Glengarnock Castle near Kilbirnie.

Why not join us, and our archaeology partners DigVentures, as we dig into Scotlands’s past on this unique archaeological excavation. You’ll learn about the powerful families who shaped much of North Ayrshire’s early history, and you’ll be helping to uncover some of the mysteries about Glengarnock Castle’s past that remain unanswered. There’ll be a chance to dig alongside our team of archaeologists, and you’ll have an opportunity to learn about archaeological techniques that go beyond digging to unearth new clues and insights into the history of the ruin.

There are lots of different ways local people (i.e. people who live within the Garnock Connections project area) can get involved...

All events will be managed in compliance with COVID restrictions meaning that places are extremely limited and advance booking is essential.

If you aren't local, or if you'd like to help fund future archaeological exploration at the castle, then you can still get involved through our crowd funding scheme...

Although all the places on our excavation team have now sold out there's still spaces available on the various workshops we're running over the weekend. If you'd like to get your hands dirty in a trench next time then follow the struck through links above to register your interest for future excavations.

Don't want to miss out on the action this time around? You can still book onto one of our site tours to see the excavations in action and chat with the archaeologists about what they've found. COVID restrictions mean that tour places will be limited and it is essential to pre-book a timed slot for your visit.
