Garnock and Avocet take to the water

The boat building volunteers at the Scottish Maritime Museum in Irvine have been hard at work over the last few months and have finished work on our two new St Ayles skiffs. The boats, now called ‘Garnock’ and ‘Avocet’ were officially launched on Saturday the 20th July when members of the public were given the chance to have a go at rowing them in Irvine harbour. The launch day happened to be during Pirate Takeover Weekend and the Garnock Connections team couldn’t resist the opportunity to join in with the fun.

The next stage of this project is to put the boats into the hands of the community so that they can be used and enjoyed regularly. To accomplish this, we are assisting in the process of setting up a coastal rowing club. If you’d like to be involved in the new club then get in touch with Simon for more information. If you’re not sure yet but would like to give rowing a go, then watch this site for news of more free have-a-go sessions with the skiffs.
