Paths Stewardship volunteering

Have you been to a Path Stewardship volunteering event yet? No? Well there is still time!

The Paths Stewardship group has teamed up with The North Ayrshire Conservation Volunteers for a series of events in Eglinton park to improve the quality of the paths. They have already cleared some blocked field drains which were not allowing water to drain properly. Consequently, instead of water running down the drains it was pouring across the paths making a muddy morass – not pleasant to walk on.

On Friday 19th August, as the nesting season has drawn to a close, the volunteers will be checking the shrubby woodland for any late nesters and then if none are found, will be cutting back encroaching shrubby woodland to open up some of the paths in the country park.
This will allow more light to reach path level helping to dry them out. More open paths are great for walkers, cyclists and horse riders as they will be able to see and be more aware of each other as they each enjoy the park.

On Friday 16th September there will be a great opportunity to do something to improve the biodiversity of the country park as well as providing a lovely scenic route for people to use.
You will be removing thick grass along the path verges, which crowds out wild flowers and prevents them from growing. Having removed the grass, you will be preparing a seed bed and planting native Scottish wildflower seeds, definitely the best for local insects, butterflies and other wildlife.

During October week we will be getting together with The Conservation Volunteers again for a final event to celebrate Garnock Connections. There will be lots to do that day…but for now the plans are under wraps. Watch this space!!
